This is my new go-to outfit, just bought these velvet leggings and jumper the other day, I'm always obsessed with anything velvet, it's the nicest fabric, so I was really happy to see these in the sale, so I bought them as a "yay-no-more-exams-at-least-for-now" present for myself, haha.

Recently I've been listening to Howler and Tribes, they're both really really amazing, they're the two bands that I'm really in love with for this year, definitely recommend that you listen!

Got this Strokes top for Christmas, and I literally haven't taken it off since, they are without a doubt my favourite band in the world (along with the Arctic Monkeys!)

I think music has gradually taken over like everything in my life, and there's this quote which I love, that Alex Turner said, incidentally about The Strokes too, which is so perfect: "There is always that one band that comes along when you are 14 or 15 years old that manages to hit you in just the right way and changes your whole perception of things."
And I suppose that's how it is for me, I started listening to both The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys on my actual birthday last year, which is odd, haha, and I can't really imagine life without them. I'd even dress like Julian Casablancas if I could.

So yeah, just my love letter to 'em.

Just a few things that I bought today, shoulda been revising but this was more fun. These jumpers were from the men's section of Primark which I have always thought was so so much better than the normal womenswear, (which I can never bring myself to buy because of the quality). I was really happy to find a Ramones jumper, I love them so much. And I'm a sucker for anything with an aztec print, so I had to get these other tops. I do like a lot of the flat shoes in Primark though, and these boots were like half price, which is kind of amazing.

bigger boys and stolen sweethearts

Made this DIY hair bow today, yay for dressing like a five year old! At the moment I really love overly childish or pretty things like that though.

I found a scrap of fabric in my room and thought it would look quite good good as a bow, which is lucky cause I was planning to buy a hairbow anyway. Think I was supposed to be revising, but I made this instead.

And sorry for the really messy hair, haha this is why I hate using flash!

EDIT: I was asked to do a tutorial, erm as you probably know now I'm awful at explaining things, but basically this is what I did...

1. Cut a rectangle of fabric, (as large as you like, but remember the bow will be half as big as what you cut) and cut another smaller rectangle piece as well ( I chopped mine off the end of the first one, mine was about an inch thick but you can do whatever, make sure it's a lot smaller than the original rectangle, this bit will make the "knot" in the middle)
2. Sew the opposite shorter ends of the rectangle together. So now you have a loop of fabric, and a random other piece.
3. Then you just pinch the middle of the loop, so that it looks a bit like a bow, and wrap the other piece around the middle quite tightly, and sew it secure. Mine was kind of a trial-and-error diy, so I can't quite remember the exact things I did, aha but if you have any questions just ask :)

I'm definitely getting into "spring" mode, I know it's still freezing outside but I've been pouring over style.com and ELLE instead of revising, and I can't get enough of delicate, pretty dresses and photos full of light.

Also, how are everyone's resolutions going, if you made them? I'm trying my best at mine (pass exams, eat healthier and remember to think "what would alexa chung do?"), I've not given up yet!

So this jacket was another thing I got from the RI sale, it's so different to what I'd normally wear, to the point where I'm actually questioning my taste! I know this all is really over the top about one jacket, isn't it, but I'm really not used to wearing things that can't be tucked into shorts, haha.

Also everything goes back to normal tomorrow, boo. Dreading waking up early and having to leave my nice warm bed, and also desperately trying to do some exercise and not eat chocolate. At least it means spring is going to come soon, I guess!

This is what I wore for new year's eve, I literally whacked this outfit on half an hour before leaving, I was supposed to wear a dress but I found out the day before that it didn't fit me anymore, nightmare, so I chopped up some old clothes to make this (velvet!) top and got this skirt out again, and I actually quite like how they look together.

I would have posted this yesterday but I was asleep for like 95% of the day, but today I've been trying to make some resolutions and things, so far I have 3:

1. pass all my exams

2. ~~only eat whatever victoria's secret models eat~~ eat a bit less junk food

3. approach everything thinking "what would Alexa Chung do?"

A few people have been asking for more diy's and stuff, so I will do a post on the top if you like?

This coat is one of the things I managed to snag in the boxing day sales, it's from River Island which is somewhere I never used to shop but recently I've been going in there more and more. I haven't had a proper winter coat in ages and ages so I wasn't sure about getting this in case it was a bit too granny/schoolchild in ww2 but it's really warm and fuzzy so I couldn't really say no.

Watched New Year's Eve today, which makes me pretty excited for New Year's, I think my outfit is sorted now so that's good! I feel like I should make some resolutions or something, but I never stick to them! Have you got any?

leeds snaps

So I went to Leeds today to do some shopping, I ended up not buying any clothes at all, which was a little dissappointing but I got some lipstick and Wonka Nerds instead, which are the best sweets ever, so it was worth it. And I spent like two hours in Urban Outfitters, it's my favourite shop ever, so so wish that I could just buy the whole shop. Also, I am so obsessed with Cambridge Satchel Company bags, I want one in every single colour!

Got bored on the train home so I was practising my pulling/repelling face, no one around me found it very amusing.

Am exhausted but I need to find an outfit for New Year's Eve, hopefully I can magic some velvet out of my wardrobe otherwise I have no idea what to wear, eeek!

This dress was made last year out of a very old skirt, but I've hardly ever worn it. The best thing about DIY and self-made clothes has to be that it feels like you're getting new clothes for free, and it doesn't even take up wardrobe space. I can't think of anything in the world that's better than free clothes.

Hope you all had a nice christmas, I had a lovely one but I won't bore you with too many details. I don't normally get much for christmas, especially not clothes, because I much much prefer shopping and buying them myself. That's the most fun part of getting clothes for me, but I did get a Strokes tshirt (the one you all chose!) which I am really happy with!

Yesterday I went to the boxing day sales, oh my god they were the worst I have ever ever seen them! I gave up quite quickly, but not before I'd spent like half of my Christmas money on stuff I never even knew I needed. I'm going to Leeds tomorrow for some proper shopping, can't wait to go to Urban Outfitters and hopefully get something nice.

Found these photos on my camera. Can't remember when or where I took them, but I love all of the lights at night, everything looks so magical and different. I've been listening to Midnight City by M83, which is such a amazing song, and it reminds me of that sort of thing.

Also, did everyone watch Made In Chelsea last night? Aaaahhh it was so so good! I'm absolutely obsessed with that show, I'm more excited for season 3 than my own birthday. Don't judge me.

Starting to feel really christmassy now, I've had She & Him's christmas songs on repeat all day, Zooey Deschanel's voice is just too wonderful. Can't wait till boxing day too, hopefully the sales will be good. Gosh I love sales, I'm especially excited to buy every velvet thing Topshop has to offer.

Just realised I was mainly wearing vintage today, yay. Also, you might have noticed that I only have like 2 pairs of trousers, and way more pairs of shorts, so I really like the whole long-socks-over-tights thing, it's pretty much the only way I won't freeze with the wardrobe that I've got. I dunno why I always wear shorts, I think they're just much easier to wear. I guess I've never found any interesting types of trousers. But if you find some, you should tell me.

And i've changed how my blog looks quite a bit, the header's on the side now, do you like it? I haven't decided yet

My camera is such a nightmare indoors, grr. Literally counting down the days until I can get a new one! Found this top in the back of my wardrobe (why do all my clothes end up there?!), I quite like the flowers on it so it had to be worn.

Also, I don't think there's like any photos on here of me with my hair up, haha, I don't really ever wear it up, but I think I might start. I really, really want short hair (like an Alexa Chung type bob), but because I'm too scared to cut, this is the next best thing.

I've really done nothing today, except bake and eat butterfly cakes (the best kind of cake in my opinion) and re-organize my iTunes. I forgot I had The Smiths and The Cure on there, so now I'm just listening to them and moping around and being all teenage angst-y. Fun stuff.

it's getting dark and the sky looks sticky

I haven't really done anything this week, except count down the hours until Christmas and try not to eat all my advent calender chocolate in one day. I did stick some pictures up on my wall, it's kind of like my inspiration board, but it's also so that I can stare at pictures of The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys while I go to sleep.

Also, it kills me to say it, but I've started becoming more interested in music than fashion recently, and I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing really. Maybe it's because I haven't had a copy of ELLE magazine in about eight months... actually there are quite a lot of reasons why I'm leaning towards music-y stuff, but it does NOT mean I love clothes any less at all, it's just that I think about indie bands more than headbands these days. Kind of weird for me.

Anyway, tomorrow's my last day, at least for two weeks, yay! Gonna try and post more often during the holidays.

some diy things for the holidays

Some Diy's that I really want to do over the Christmas holidays, not that they look very christmassy:
1. These shorts would be easy enough, like just find some aztec-y fabric (or any pattern really!) and sew it on. I think I might just buy a cheap aztec top in the sales and cut it up. They're like a new version of my old America shorts, cause they died a while ago while I was trying to dye them. Moral of that story - never leave pure bleach on shorts for 7 hours, it's not pretty.
2. Also, I am obsessed with this fringed clutch, and as I have loads of loop fringing left from Halloween, I think I might make a black version.

Got this furry thing for £5 in summer and I've hardly ever worn it, but now that it's so bitterly cold outside I might start! I know everyone is saying this, but I really want it to snow!

Also, this outfit is really quite different to what I normally wear, I think I prefer jumpers and skirts to be honest!

I tried making my Christmas list for the 100000th time today, but there's literally nothing I want. I much much prefer going shopping after Christmas, because there's the sales and I'll finally have some money. I think I prefer actually shopping to getting new things. Just being around clothes and in shops and things. Shops are definitely my version of Audrey Hepburn's Tiffanys.

swinging with the old stars

Haven't done a DIY for a while, but I made this skirt recently from an awful old dress that I used to have, basically I just cut the top part off and added an elastic waistband. I hardly ever buy skirts because they're just so easy to make! Recycle, re-use and all that.

Anyway, I really quite like this skirt, it's good for twirling around in. Not so good in the wind though!

And excuse my messy hair as I'm trying to grow my fringe out, I've never been fringe-less in my whole life (seriously) and I don't really know what to do with my hair without it, haha.

This week I have had a cold and a piano exam (grade 6, eek!), I don't know which one was worse. Do any of you's play instruments?

Also, I've had a few emails asking me how I take my photos/who takes them - I use a little Panasonic lumix point and shoot camera and my tripod and selftimer, and I take them myself. I'd feel a little bit awkward if someone else was taking them, but I'm a proper control freak though!

I am very much one of those girls in my everyday outfits, I'm too awkward to be very polished and pretty all the time, and I much prefer things that are a mix of boyish and girly-ness. But yeah, the fact that Alexa Chung said this at the British Fashion Awards the other night just makes me love her even more (if that's even possible!)

Anyway, today was a day off as everyone was on strike, so this is just one of my everyday scruffy outfits, haha. Also, I'm starting to think this hat is surgically attached to my head, I swear I'm always wearing it!

I get very jealous of other people's hair. Sky Ferreira and Alexa Chung have especially enviable hair I think, even though they're totally different. Actually I envy everything about Alexa Chung, but anyway...

About 3 years ago I cut my hair into a kind of bob, it was awful, and I've been growing it out ever since, but I've reached a point now where I'm kind of bored with my hair and it's in a bad state right now. I really really really want Alexa Chung style hair, but I'm a bit scared to cut it off in case it looks awful. I know it grows back and stuff but I'm not sure yet, I think I'm going to leave it long until prom and then chop the lot off? Or not? Ahh decisions!

I didn't mean to buy these shorts. Actually I didn't mean to buy anything, but they were so sparkly and they fit perfectly and they had my size, so I kind of had to. I now have more shorts than any person living in England should, but oh well!

And I literally never take this hat off. I'm so obsessed with it, I think hats must be the most fun things in the world to wear.

Also, I've been trying to write a Christmas list this week, but there is genuinely nothing that I want except tickets to The Strokes (not that they're even going on tour), Alex Turner/Harry Styles's hand in marriage and Alexa Chung's legs, wardobe and hair. Somehow I kind of doubt these things will turn up under my tree, so instead I'm just looking forward to eating a ton of chocolate.

interview: nick of hero&cape

"My name is Nick, I'm 25 and a transportation design graduate. Things that excite me are Krispy Kreme, Diet Coke, the cinema, any form of creativity from anybody, City And Colour, Bon Iver and just generally listening to music, drawing and zoning out!

Hero&Cape is a new British creative label, we are driven by clothing and artwork that is as special to you as a superhero's cape! Our aim is to make you the hero of the story, with unique and original illustrations and hand printed clothing!

Our first collection is a capsule range of white tees with a twist. We have designed on white T-shirts (our blank canvas) to show they can be stylish and fashionable. With screen-printed original drawings, we see it as a piece of wearable art!"

-Why did you decide to start Hero & Cape?

I graduated from Transportation Design in 2009 and back then I didn't even think about starting my own business/label. I was doing mostly freelance work with short stints at various design consultancies. I just reached a point where I thought, I'm 24 years old and I need something long-term and fresh that I'm passionate about and that I can throw all my efforts into.

I've always drawn, since I was a little boy and that love of drawing and creating translated very nicely into the business plan of Hero&Cape. The clothing aspect of it just came from the desire to offer something that was different to the high street offerings. So often you'll see people wearing the same things and I thought, there must be something that I can do in order to offer something different and unique.

So a year ago, I sold my car, saved up and started Hero&Cape. It's probably the biggest gamble I've ever taken in life and it was so daunting and exciting at the same time!

-And why should we all be wearing it?

You should all be wearing it because it gives a positive message about who you are and what you are about! We want our customers to feel special and feel like they're wearing something that has been made just for them. All our T-shirts are individually printed to order, so you can be sure that the T-shirt you get through the post is printed for you and you only!

I think it also says that you appreciate craft and creativity. These designs are all hand drawn from my inspiration and influences. So I guess that each design has a meaning and is not produced only to please the management or the market researchers. Like I said before, we see our T-shirts (in a small way) as a piece of illustrated art.

-You must have a favourite tee from the collection? I think mine would have to be the Balloons and a Bicycle one!)

This is a hard one! It's like making me choose between my children! I think for me, my favourite is also the one that means the most to me and speaks most strongly to me. That would be the Imagination Rules the World design. I think everyone can be imaginative and be creative, it's just about unlocking it and getting out of your mind! Art and design is such a subjective thing, and whenever people say to me "I can't draw" or "I wish I could draw" I just say to them "rubbish! anyone can draw!" because I genuinely believe that anyone can produce art. For me art is a physical expression of whats in a persons mind, and if you can put pen to paper (or any other medium, sculpture, model etc) and create something that is unique and has meaning to the artist then that to me is art, no matter how "wrong" or "bad" it looks.

-Where do you find inspiration?

Inspiration can come from anything! I think its hard to pinpoint inspiration, but I think this queastion relates back to the previous question in a way, in that all the designs are a piece of my mind. So I guess that you could say the inspiration for Hero&Cape is everything I've ever seen, heard and experienced! If I had to name things that inspire me I'd say the mind and its ability to create, and things I see everyday, I think its important to actually see things, not just look, but really see whatever you're looking at is about. Most of the time there's a reason why every product looks the way it does, and in nature everything has a meaning.

I think we're very lucky to have so much available inspiration on tap via the internet and other media, the world has become such a small place. Some people would argue that its made it more difficult to be original but if you look at all the imagery and videos that is made available to us via technology then I think there's more sources of inspiration out there than ever before.

-Being a Northener (like me!), would you say there's anything special about northern style?

I don't think there's anything particularly different about northern style but I'd say I think it's heavily influenced by music, which is not a bad thing as music has always been closely linked with fashion!

-What's next for Hero & Cape? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I try not to think 5 years ahead as that means I'll be crossing the 30 year old border! But for Hero&Cape, I hope to have expanded to a point where we are offering a wide range of clothing. We will definitely be offering more variety in terms of products and I hope even to be producing bespoke one-off pieces of clothing that is hand made from scratch. I think that is the ultimate goal, to be producing Hero&Cape fashion that is designed, produced and sold by us in-house from the start. But the most important thing in 5 years time is for us not to lose our focus or our direction and be true to the reason why Hero&Cape was started.

-What's on your playlist at the moment?

I've actually just created a new playlist this week! It contains Bon Iver, City And Colour, Foster The People, Empire of The Sun, the new Florence album, and I still need to add the new Birdy album to it!

-What was the last movie you watched and book you read, and were they any good?

The last movie was My Neighbour Totoro and the latest book I'm reading is John Le Carre's The Spy Who Came In From the Cold.

My Neighbour Totoro was actually the first Studio Ghibli film I ever watched and as a child it blew my mind! I had it on VHS and watched it all the time. I was amazed by the idea that in any back garden there could a passage that would lead you to a giant secret friend! Having watched it recently, its amazing to see how little its aged as a film (it was released in 1988!) and its still extremely fun to watch!

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold is a book I bought a long time ago but never really got round to reading, I've actually just started so I'll have to get back to you with a verdict on that one!

i've got an atlas in my hands

One of my many obsessions is maps, (even though I'm beyond awful at reading them) so when I saw this tee in Topshop I had to buy it. I've been wanting it for ages!

I've got a big map of Paris on my wall, my mum got it when she went to Paris like 20 years ago. I don't know why she kept it, but I'm glad she did because it's lovely.

I actually bought the majority of this outfit in London, which is quite exciting isn't it! Well maybe not if you live in London, but anyway... I got this bowler hat recently (not from London though!) from H&M cause a new one opened and they were basically giving away money, so I got this hat for free! I'm a bit obsessed with it, even though it's not the most practical thing for winter because it flies off in the wind.

Also, yay Beatles tshirt! I love it a lot, and I also love the Beatles a lot, so I'm glad I've got it. It always annoys me when people were band tshirts and they don't even like the band, do any of you find it a bit silly? Or is it just me? I dunno, it might be.

But yeah, next on my Band Tee List is a Strokes one, I lalalalove The Strokes, so as soon as I find one I'm going to get it!

And sorry sorry sorry for the awful photo quality recently, but it's always too dark to take photos outside now, and my camera is not very good indoors, which sucks. Bring back summer (or a nice new camera for christmas)

ARCTIC MONKEYS AND THE VACCINES

Went to see Arctic Monkeys last night at Newcastle, and the Vaccines were supporting (and they were amazing!) Oh my god. I've tried to describe how good it was, but there really are no words, it was beyond incredible. The Arctic Monkeys are my favourite band of all time, but it was still a million times better than I expected, still can't believe that I was in the same room as them. And they sung Mardy Bum, and I almost cried, seriously. Have never screamed so loud in my entire life.

And at one point Alex Turner said "happy birthday" to someone, and everyone was saying that he said it to Alexa Chung (I thought he did too!) but it turns out he said it to some other random girl. But I am still going to believe that he was saying it about Alexa Chung, because it is so perfect.

Anyway, yeah, I'd give anything to see them again tomorrow! Such a good night.

Haven't had my own laptop in over a week now and I'm starting to wonder how I ever existed without it, it's like one of my nightmares came true!

Anyway, I haven't done anything this weekend at all, but I have been planning my Halloween costume, cause I don't have anything better to do. Have decided that I'm going as a Native American/Pocahontas kind of thing, and I've just got a massive feather headdress off of ebay, so I'm excited for that to arrive. But I am going to be pretty busy in the next few weeks - got a wedding on the other side of the country to go to, this Halloween party and some other random stuff.

my new lula magazine has arrived!

The new issue (issue 13) of Lula Magazine arrived at my door yesterday, and as it is only my second issue I still get completely over-excited when I see it but it's already my favourite magazine ever. Also, I was really bored so I did a sketch of one of the editorials, haha. I like drawing but I'm not nearly as good at it as I'd like to be!

We had a bit of a heatwave yesterday so I've been reading it outside in the sun, the best way to read anything in my opinion!

However it's kind of cold and miserable today, though I did go shopping earlier - no luck buying anything but I did pick up one of those 214 zines from Topshop, which are always really really good. So now I'm sat in my bed with a big bar of Galaxy and some of interesting things to read and lots and lots of pretty pictures to look at!

The nicest way to spend a Sunday.

I found this skirt at the bottom of my wardrobe the other day, and I kinda fell in love with the sort-of-messy tie dye again, so I just wanted to wear it. Plus I've been wearing a lot more black lately so it seemed more fun. Also, it's the Return Of The Ex-Apron/DIY Tribal Backpack. Surprisingly it fits quite a lot of stuff in!

The highlight of my day today was probably eating chocolate torte (mmm...) and buying mascara. Highly exciting.

Also, I've recently been listening to a lot of covers, and I'm in love with the Owl Eyes cover of Pumped Up Kicks (Foster The People) and the Lily Allen cover of Naive (The Kooks), and you should definitely listen to both if you get the chance!

If there's any good covers of songs that you like, please please reccommend some in a comment below, because my iPod needs serious updating! I'd appreciate it :)

I'm reading Breakfast At Tiffany's at the moment, cause after loving the film for so so long, I thought I should finally read the book. The film is my absolute favourite in the world, every time I feel sad, or get a particularily nasty case of the mean reds (or blues), I put it on, and within two minutes, as soon as Moon River starts playing and Audrey's wearing that immortal dress, I feel 100000 times better.

I didn't want to read it at first actually, because the film is so special to me I thought it might ruin it, if you know what I mean? Like because I always think that books are better than the film (except for Devil Wears Prada!) but actually this was okay, the book is really, really good, there's some definite differences from the film of course, but I loved Holly Golightly in it, she seems a lot more lost, which is kinda how I've been feeling recently. Truman Capote is a very good writer, however the film is still my all time absolute favourite thing EVER.

So a t-shirt with New York on it seemed like a suitably perfect thing to wear, hehe, but I do love the print on that top, I just don't wear it enough!

Oh and these are my scruffy boots, they used to be like white/grey but I thought it would be a good idea to paint them brown. With shoe polish. It wasn't the pinnacle of my diy ideas, but never mind. Am going to paint them black for winter I think :)

reasons why i love fashion #2

FASHION WEEK.
The only thing that excites me as much as birthday presents and The Strokes. The only thing that keeps me alive during the depressive back-to-school September, and the post-Chrismas/food coma recovery February, and gives me something to look forward to in the crappest of weather.

I love it. I'm obsessed with it.
And I've never even been.

But I guess I don't really need to, I mean thank to the whole "ooh digital space future technology" age that I happen to live in, it's like I'm already there. I mean, I'm not, obviously, and there is nothing in the world that I would ~~like~~ LOVE more than to get a invitation to a show (or just to sneak into a show, I really wanna try that!), but the fact that I can watch say, Marc Jacobs show his collection at the same time as an editor at Vogue (assuming she hasn't dropped in to see the collection beforehand the lucky beeyatch but LET'S NOT THINK ABOUT THAT), that's pretty unreal if you ask me. And watching a show and then seeing everyone gush about it after and gushing with them, I don't know, there's just this feeling of being part of something really special.

I guess this is the closest I'll ever get to knowing how it feels to be a "belieber", you know, obsession-wise.
I'm cool with that.

I'll always remember the time I literally sprinted home from school to catch the Burberry A/W 10 show, (you know, the one with those season-defining aviator jackets and amazing buckled boots? yeah, that one!) and if you know me, you'll know that it takes something life-threatening to even get me to JOG, so yeah, that's devotion for you. Anyway I made it just in time, and my then-12-year-old self and my hot chocolate just sat and had the best twenty minutes ever. That was probably my favourite show that season, and I actually can't wait to see what reinvention the trench has taken on this season.

Glitter chelsea boots. Oh my god. I can't quite describe how much I am in love with these boots, especially the silver ones. I'm feeling quite lost at the moment, my brain is all over the place, and so are my sleeping patterns, however wanderlusting has become like my new favourite pastime. Nothing is nicer than beautiful pictures, and there's nothing better to dream about than the amazing places I want to see. I love photos like these, and I'm also really obsessed with maps. I found an old one of Paris, which is up on my wall now.

By the way, I can't find the sources for most of these photos, it's really hard to find the sources when they're just floating around tumblr and the internet and I hate not giving proper credit (photos 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 13, 14, are all not mine,) but just a reminder that if I ever use any photos of yours and you want it taken off, please just let me know :)

And I've found the perfect song for wanderlusting, actually, the perfect song for anything. It's called Atlas Hands by Benjamin Fancis Leftwich, and you really really really need to listen to it, I saw a video of him at reading featival and it's such an amazing song. Found this old bag in my wardrobe yesterday, I think it was from a holiday to China a long time ago and I thought it looked quite interesting, and it's all handmade, which is quite nice.

Just some DIYs that are in the making right now, making a shredded t-shirt with Young Blood written on it (The Naked and Famous reference!) and am painting some of my old boots brown with shoe polish, which I'm pretty sure isn't the way it was intended to be used, but it works surprisingly well! And if it doesn't turn out too good, I can always go over them in black.

Also, I have changed the blog theme/layout/whatever it's called, it took me a while, it's so fiddly getting things where you want them to be! I'm still adjusting to it, but what do you think?

DIY tribal backpack

Do you wanna hear a story?

Well, the other day, I was rummaging through my mum's wardrobe, as you do, and I found an old apron with a pretty cool aztec-y pattern on it, and I was like "hey, you'd make a cool little backpack!", and it was like "yeah, okay," and so we became friends and it magically became a backpack.
(Actually it wasn't magic but you can do it basically just by 1. folding in half and joining the two vertical sides but not the curved top part, to make an cylinder with a flap, 2. tucking and folding the bottom of the cylinder into a base and 3. folding the smaller top part to be a flap and removing and re-placing the straps where you want them. It's a little more complicated than that but I'm no good at these things, please comment if you have questions though!)

And we all lived happily ever after.

Actually, no we didn't, because the material is very floppy and shapeless so it gets quite annoying if you're trying to carry things in it, so right now it if just hanging in my room, and I have a feeling it will be there for quite a while. Oh well, it looks kinda cool.

Also, I finally got my haircut, but as you can see it wasn't really a "cut", more of a "lightly snipping at the ends" sort of thing, which I am honestly relieved about because I really didn't fancy growing out a bob again (painful memories, all involving straightner burns!), cause that looked pretty horrific.

Andrew Vanwyngarden, (and basically everything MGMT,) is literally the coolest thing ever, (aside from Alexa Chung, of course.)
I guess this isn't really fashion-related, but anyone with curly hair that wears amazing tie dye ponchos and those headbands is a style icon for me, and it helps that they have some of the best songs ever.
So... yeah, I'm kind of a huge MGMT fan, if you haven't noticed, hehe, just had to get this out there. Off to find a tie dye poncho for myself now!

I got these shorts from Forever 21 in London the other week, and I'm sort of in love with them. They kinda reminded me of Alexa Chung, because of the suspenders and stuff, which you can't see in these photos, but I'll probably be wearing these loads so I'll get another photo of them. I was really pleasantly surprised at the Forever 21, it was huuuge and very very American, and there were some really really really nice things for quite cheap, and it was so shiny and new that I couldn't not love it!

This top is a weird one, I got it on sale in topshop and it's really floaty but a bit overly so, and it's really hard to wear it with anything and photographs horrendously, so sorry guys haha

Well, they're my perfect pairs of shoes, as I'm currently obsessed with velvet, chunky heels, chelsea boots and leopard print (honestly all those things, I'm not just saying that... especially velvet and chunky heels), so I can't imagine nicer shoes than these at the moment! And because the only shoes I wear/buy are brogues and boots, yes, even in summer. Which do you prefer? And what are your perfect shoes right now? I'm so nosy, haha!

london photo diary

A lot happened in my trip to London this week: I saw a Christopher Kane cosmic-print taxi (which I'm gutted I didn't get a photo of!), went round enough museums to last a lifetime, shopped in the brand new Forever 21, saw a real McQueen dress from his last ever "Plato" s/s 10 collection, stayed in what was possibly the worst hotel in the world, ate dim sum, shawarma, too many McDonalds, "glaston-berry" ice cream and lots of beyond amazing cakes from Laduree. It was pretty good.

In Knightsbridge I got model scouted, which was really odd but kind of cool, I guess.

And I had the best conversation ever about Balmain with one of the sales people about those studded safety pin jackets from spring (sold out in a day apparently), the mood of the a/w collection (a bit more subdued with a military theme... aren't they all military themed?!), the best collection ever (that sparkly 80's Balmania wonder of a/w 09!) and the size you would have to be to squeeze into the insane skinny leather pants, which according to him was size 0 (I died a little inside.) and which I refuse to believe.

Oh and I saw Platform 9 and three quarters, and I'm not gonna lie, I did try and see if I could go through the wall. Sadly think I have to accept that I'll be a muggle for life.

THE SUN WAS OUT! Holy shit guys, today I woke up and I could actually see some COLOUR behind all those grey clouds. I'm far too excited, really.

Anyway, all I have to say really is that this waistcoat goes with everything. And I know, I know, I say that about a lot of things I own, as a way to justify the money that I spent on them, even though I really didn't need them and couldn't afford them, BUT this waistcoat honestly goes with everything. I don't know if it's the colour, which is an almost-white-ish grey, or the shape, or what, but even though it doesn't look particularily amazing in photos, it's the easiest thing to wear ever. And did I mention it was half price in the sale omg.

I'm going to London tomorrow, so I won't be posting for a while but there'll be a photospam when I get back! Yay! Hopefully I'll get to do a little shopping, but it's a family holiday so ughh I dunno. Dying to go to some good vintage shops and that Lucy In Disguise one. And Selfridges, of course.

Yepp, you guessed it. Well done you, no hints or anything! Burgundy, maroon, wine, whatever you call it, is my new favourite colour. I'm actually obsessed with it. I want to dye all my clothes this colour and paint my walls and get those glasses like on the Wizard of Oz, but instead of everything being emerald, it can be burgundy instead. It's not too much, is it? Aha, at least grey's not my favourite colour anymore, like it was some time last year. Grey clothes get pretty dull after a while, but it was the recession, and grey is Very Versatile.
So yeah, although I don't actually intend to wear burgundy all winter long, I'm definitely going to get some jeans/shorts/make up in that colour, and mix it with a lot of leopard print knitwear and black everything else.

Oh god, as if I'm planning winter clothes and it's not even August yet, what da fook. But I can't help it, there's just way too many amazing boots and jumpers in Topshop right now to tempt me, I really can't resist.

reasons why i love fashion: #1

So I guess we should start from the beginning, why do I like fashion? Well it's kind of my only "hobby" or interest, that not too many other people are into. But I would never, ever, ever say that I'm really into fashion to someone, because it sounds like I'm being really big headed or something, which I'm really not, but I think a lot of people assume that if you're into fashion then you think you're proper mint, and really fashionable and big headed, or that you should have a massive wardrobe and amazing clothes.
And I don't have/think either of those things, I really really don't, and even though I wish and whine constantly about having more clothes and stuff, there's a lot more to fashion than that.

If you didn't know me, I don't think you can tell, just by looking at me, that I'm obsessed with that sort of stuff. Actually, I have no idea if you can tell or not, but I don't think so anyway. But it really gives me something to do, and something to look forward too (like getting ELLE collections or waiting to watch the Alexander Wang live stream!), and I've learnt a lot and discovered a lot and especially since I live in such a boooring ass place, nothing passes time quite like looking through the archives of style.com, and nothing inspires me to get out of bed like an obsession with a pair of shoes and a quest to find a cheaper version.

I do realise that that sounds a bit shallow and it's defnitely not the most important reason, but I have eaten way too much and I just can't write anything deep now, haha.

And oooh I've got some shorts sat in purple dye right now that I need to take out, yaaaaay!

reasons why i love fashion

I realised recently that I don't write very much on this blog anymore, and it struck me as odd because I started this blog because a) I was unbearably bored, and b) because my family were kind of sick of me rambling about my new issues of ELLE and the various reasons why I wanted to be Alexa Chung and buy clothes. And I just think recently I've sort of forgot about that, and I haven't really felt enthusiastic about anything really, least of all fashion.

However when I got my ELLE Collections the other day, I kind of got that all back, like that odd childish excitement at getting something that connected me with a world that I'm obsessed with, and the way that I'll pour over every page and learn it like I never will for science (which is sad, 'cause I'm beyond crap at science). So yeah, I thought I should try and remember why I like fashion, and write it down, because this is my blog, although it sort of hasn't felt that way lately. And like, I dunno, what I wear and take pictures of, it doesn't show what's in my head or my actual personal style very well right now, well I don't think so anyway.

I don't really know if anyone reads wordy posts, and mine are hardly eloquent, but here we go, I've finally got something to do this summer (LIE, actually I have a bit too much to do but internet procrastination > all of that) and I suppose I'm going to learn to fall back in love with fashion again, kind of.

AAAAAGH THAT IS SO CRINGEY, OH LOOORD.

Justs some photos from a vintage fair I went to today, I didn't buy anything but it was quite good, there were loads of stalls and I couldn't really tell the difference between them to be honest, but there was some interesting stuff. There was one dress that I really liked, and I wish I'd took a picture of it, but it was an awkward length and I was too tall for it, which was sad. It was so pretty though. Oh and I was so tempted to buy this little old camera, it's so cute! But I'm gonna save up for an actual working SLR, because I actually hate my camera. Aaagh why does everything have to cost so muchhhhhhh :(

Anyway it is finally the summer holidays, and I've been counting down the minutes till school finished, and now that it has I have absolutely nothing to do all day and nowhere to go. So I'm going to start coutning down until Christmas instead, because I seriously can't think of anything else to do

I was squinting in the sun, aha, my face isn't usually contorted like that. Woo, it's summer now guys! It's been warm for 3 whole days, which is clearly the world record for best british weather ever. I thought it would be a good idea to go for a walk in the woods really early in the morning and take pictures of flowers etc.

BAD IDEA.

In my head I was very bohemian by doing that but in reality I almost got lost in this big forest, because all the trees looked freaking identical, and about 50 nettles decided to stab me in the ankle. But it was fun and apparently it burnt off quite a lot of calories or something. Which I suppose must be a good thing.

So recently I've been trying really hard to not go shopping and buy things, and I succeeded, for two whole weeks, until yesterday (completely by accident, I was supposed to go to Asda) I wandered into the Topshop sale.

Uh oh.

I ended up going batshit crazy and buying a tonne of stuff. It's so ironic, like it would be just when I'm on a shopping ban that all the good stuff that I've been waiting ages to buy, goes on sale. Like I've wanted that waistcoat and the peace necklace and rings for a long, long time, and then I got some other clothes as well that were too nice to not buy. So it's like amazing that I've got it all now.

Also, taking advantage of the suprisingly nice weather and breaking out the shorts. Guess summer's finally here, yay.

It made me want a stately house and amazing dresses and cafes, and nostalgic 50's and memories and the magic-ness about being young and shit. Lula and Dior

My first ever issue of Lula, oh em gee. You might know that I'm obsessed with Lula magazine, so it was the best very late birthday present when it came through the post yesterday.

It's quite big, and there's hardly any ads, which is a nice change, and the photos are lovely and so are the interviews. I love it. I'm getting the next one as well, yay!

It fits in nicely with my Dior shrine too! I decided ages ago that ornaments and things are pointless, and that decorating rooms with accessories is better, it's like multi tasking or something.

Seriously, everywhere I went in in Paris, there was a cafe. Everywhere.
I love them so much, you can sit and rest and people watch, and it's really good because you see different things in all the different cafes in different areas. And they look so pretty at night!
Also, on a different level, bakeries! Oh my god, they are amazing! All the pastrys and macarons and the cakes! They look way to good to eat, but eat them anyway because they are even tastier than is actually imaginable.

So as I have said many many times now, I went to Paris last week, and I have been meaning to write up a sort of "guide" (well, it's not really a guide, more me gushing about shops I went too, but "guide" does sound better) to the shops that I thought were good in Paris. Here we go...

Let's start with Marais: Oh My God. If you take a detour of the tourist track into around Rue de Rosiers and the streets round there, it is an abosolute gold mine of gorgeous boutiques, vintage shops, and incrredible bakeries, not to mention the famous falafels of the district. My favourite shop there was definitely Coiffeur Vintage, and insanely cheap little vintage shop with absolutely amazing clothes. You can get dresses for €10 and Levi's shorts for €10 (which are what I bought) and there are a lot of accessories too, while listening to Two Door Cinema Club and other suitably amazing bands.

There's also an amazing haberdashery called La Mercerie, which has like a million different ribbons and Liberty fabrics and old sewing machines - even if you're not a DIY fan it is worth a look, and if you are, it's heaven!

I love sunglasses (my prescription glasses, not so much) and Mode de Vue has loads of perfect and vintage sunglasses and glasses, I saw some Chloe ones I really liked and they have Marc Jacobs, Cutler and Gross, vintage YSL and a tonne of unique and extremely cool frames that I would have killed to have. Also, they're a proper opticians so you can get prescription ones fitted, and getting glasses would surely be way more fun surrounded by vintage Balenciaga, right?

The green stalla of the Bouquinistes are really really famous, for a good reason. There are so so so many old books and magazines and pictures, anything you can think of, it's here. Well, not anything, but you could easily find something you liked. I got some old Vogues, but I could have spent all day there just looking.

Avenue Montaigne: In the words of Rachel Zoe, I was so so having a Chanel heart attack right then. And Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, I mean those streets were paved in Prada, Dior, Sonia Rykiel, Dolce & Gabbana, Chloe, Jil Sander... aaaagh. And I'm only young so it was my first time going to those places and I have to say I was a little intimidated, I don't know why! There were these impeccable older women just sat in Chanel, just sipping champagne and talking very fast French, I was like "Please be me in 50 years!" I was so tempted to steal one of the evening dresses from Sonia Rykiel though, they were seriously perfect. Everything was perfect. Ahhhh. If you go to Paris I think you have to go here, just for the atmosphere and because it's so iconic. I went on a monday morning so it was nice and quiet, a billion times better then the insufferable Galeries Lafeyettes on saturday. Ugh, painful memory. But yeah, this street = perfect.

Wait did I say that street = perfect? I meant DIOR = PERFECT. I worship Dior, I really do, and my ambition is to one day live out the Miss Dior commercial (Maryna Linchuk, not natalie portman!). So I went to my future home, Dior, in search of a perfect dress (which of course I wouldn't buy, my money is definitively non existant), which I found in this pink leather confection (bottom right). I think I stroked it. Creepy. Anyway, I left with a bottle of Miss Dior and the biggest, cheesiest grin on my face ever. I think it's safe to say that I love, love, love Paris.

Greenery around Paris, I love taking photos of nature and trees and things, they always look so lovely.

It looks quite quiet and calm in these photos, but oh my god, there were people EVERYWHERE. So busy!

All of the ground in Jardin de Luxembourg and Jardin des Tuileries was really really dusty, so by the end of the day my tights were absolutely covered in dust... not a good idea!

Anyway, today is my birthday! To be honest I'm not that excited, it was an average day, except with cake. But still, a birthday is a birthday so it's kind of special still.

I'm much much much more excited for tomorrow, as I'll be in Paris, and the timing couldn't be better, with the long weekend and my birthday and everything.

A little while ago I heard about the IOU Project, a really nice fashion brand whose concept was to make unique, handmade clothes that made a difference to the world. It's a really good idea, so I asked a few questions to find out a bit more...

This weekend... bought some lace, made (was making) a pair of lace trimmed shorts, saw a really nice sunset.
I am really obsessed with lace trimmed shorts at the moment, I'm going to make loads of pairs. It makes shorts a bit more pretty and you can easily take it off if you don't like it anymore. And it's unreally cheap, like you know in Boyes or just craft stores where they have like end-of-roll lace, and it's like 20p because they can't measure it? I got loads.
You can't exactly see the shorts, but this was when I was half way through making them, but I'll post a proper picture of them later.

Went shopping today to find some clothes for Paris. I say for Paris, but I just want some new clothes. Am having one of those times when, although you have a wardrobe full of things, you just have nothing to wear.

Anyway, was looking desperately for a dress, ignored literally everything else, and came away with nothing except dissappointment, until I went to Deep "vintage" and got some "silk" shorts. I wanted to buy a whole lot more (well, about 10 pairs of shorts) but I really couldn't. When I say "vintage" whilst talking about Deep, if you've never been you should know that although it claims to be a vintage shop, and yes it does have some pretty cute vintage in it, there are quite a few things that simply cannot be vintage. Like amazing multi-coloured shorts, all exactly the same and conviently in different sizes? Hmmm.

But honestly, I'm not complaining, I freaking LOVE that shop. :D

Also, my borderline-obsessive love of ELLE... it's kind of a secret but I have 3 years worth of ELLE (UK) magazines sat in my room... I'm far too attached to throw them away.

Am thinking about putting lace around the bottom of these shorts tomorrow, hope it turns out alright.

Taking advantage of the mint weather at the moment and breaking out the summer clothes - it's been like a year since I've worn shorts for three days straight! Amazing. And the holidays have only just started which is even better.
Bought this "Miami Beach" top today and it's appropriately summery so it had to be worn, but the waistcoat was in the topshop sale and I didn't realise it was like 3 sizes to big until after I'd bought it, but it doesn't actually matter too much, it fits quite well... not sure what that's saying about my weight but oh well.

Also, the amazing people at styleclone.com did a feature on me, which is really really nice of them, and you should all go and have a look! :D

The weather has been getting nicer and nicer so it's finally time to break out the summer stuff.
I am still in love with all things 60's/70's, hippie inspired so I am trying to buy a lot of things like that, but I've been seeing a lot of big floppy hats in some shops, and I really like them, so I got one for myself. I love those bowler hats too, supposedly they are really cool at the moment so I'd expect them to be in loads of shops but I haven't seen any that I like yet. But anyways yeah, I got this one and even though I'm not sure how many times I'll actually wear it, it is a lot of fun! And it is coming with me to Paris, so yay!

Speaking of Paris, it is exactly 40 DAYS til I go! New dress! It's from H&M and I am quite in love with it. I've loved those 60's, hippie kind of dresses for a long time now and I finally found one that was just right for me. It was weird, I never intended to buy a dress but there was just one of these hanging there, in my size and I just had to buy it. I haven't seen it there before and I doubt I will again... but sometimes it's almost like something's meant to be. Which is pretty deep, for just clothes, but I do feel like that sometimes! Maybe it's just luck.

Sheer skirts... I think these are probably a love it or hate it thing - on the runways they look a bit extreme for everyday, but so did underwear-as-outerwear last season and that filtered down pretty well, I think.
But yeah, sheer skirts. Personally I love them! Especially the Gucci ones (bottom right with the yellow flowered top), they were absolutely beautiful, like the only time I've actually liked Gucci (there was one other time I suppose, like a/w 08 or something :$ ) but it looks really romantic and pretty as eveningwear, with those flowers and bright colours, they are definitely one of my favourite runway looks of a/w 2011.

They don't just have to be for dressy occasions though, like the top two images (|Jeremy Laing and Rodarte) they actually work quite well with slouchy jumpers, leggings and boots. I honestly do think these skirts are very versatile. At first glance I was a bit like "Huh?" but y'know, you don't have to show your knickers to the world, there are far more ways of wearing them.

However this way of wearing it is my favourite, and the most wearable: I really like outfits where there is a skirt underneath the sheer one, like these below, I think they are the perfect balance and once I have made mine ( I have the sheer black fabric, just don't have time!) I'll be wearing it like these.

So yeah, I love sheer skirts - do you??

I've been a big fan of this girl's designs for a while now, but I never got round to posting about it, so here we are! Seterah is an NYC-based designer, and this is her "Brightness Dawn" collection, which is just absolutely stunning. It's so futuristic and spacey but it does also feel like a fantasy and especially the big dress, really beautiful. The prints and colours go perfectly together, just the right amount of bright and bold, and mysterious and ethereal; and the shapes of the actual garments is are amazing - really structured and modern but kinda fluid too. I seriously seriously wish I had one of these pieces, but the online boutique isn't open yet, and even if it was I reaaally doubt I could buy one anyway! Oh well, it never hurts to look though, does it!

However there was something that sprung to mind whenever I saw this dress, and that is Christopher Kane resort. I've posted these before and love them, but there is a bit of similarity, but in this case its not a bad thing at all because they have a total different feel to them and really, you can't have too much of such a good thing. Besides it is impossible to do something completely unique, there will always be a little bit of someone else in there.

So yeah, I love Christopher Kane, and I love Seterah Mohtarez. Really cant wait to see what she does next!

Anyway the weather was like summer, how amazing, I really hope we have a hot summer this year. Isn't that like a saying - cold winters mean hot summers? Hmm.
